Know your flood risk

Over 27,000 properties are at risk of flooding from rivers and sea in and around Weston-super-Mare.

The Environment Agency works in partnership with North Somerset Council to provide protection from flooding to people in Weston-super-Mare.

The homes and businesses in the town are protected by a network of embankments, sand dunes and flood walls. These include 12 tide gates along the promenade that are operated by North Somerset Council and may be closed in various combinations depending on the level of risk expected. The Environment Agency operates sluices which prevent high tide water from entering Uphill Great Rhyne and reduces flood risk.

While flood defences are very effective at protecting properties when water levels rise, no defence can provide a guarantee against flooding.

Planning ahead and knowing what actions to take can significantly reduce the potential impacts of flooding on your home, health and wellbeing.

Uphill Flood, 1981

In 1981 the highest tidal record hit the Somerset coast, resulting in substantial flooding across the area.

‘The Flood: When the sea showed its teeth’ was an exhibition and installation co-created and imagined by filmmaker Sally Low, climate activist Ana Salote and producer Paula Birtwistle, and shown at Tropicana Weston, during the ‘SEE MONSTER’ installation in 2022.
