Who manages flood risk

Flooding is managed by different organisations working together.

Environment Agency

  • manages flooding from larger rivers and streams (main rivers), the sea and reservoirs
  • has a national role in managing flood and coastal change risk
  • provides flood warnings and risk information
  • builds and maintains flood defences

  • manage flooding from surface water, groundwater and smaller watercourses
  • responsible for managing coastal erosion and landslip risks in their areas
  • plan for and respond to local flooding emergencies
